Operation of Starting Unloading System

The purpose of the system is torelieve cylinder pressure when the compressor stops permitting itto start against a light load; increasing the life of the driverand belts and also reducing the possibility of tripping theoverload relay. The system operates in the following MANNer:

The centrifugal unloader is attachedto the end of the crankshaft, thus when the compressor is inoperation, centrifugal force acts upon the unloader weights andthey swing outward. When the compressor stops, these weightsretract, permitting the thrust pin spring to move the plunger andthrust pin outward. The thrust pin opens the pilot valve and thetrapped air pressure escapes from the cylinder and intercoolerthrough a passage in the frame end cover through theunloader tube and to atmosphere through the inlet filter/silencer.The cylinders and intercooler are now relieved of all pressure andthe compressor is unloaded.

When the compressor starts,centrifugal force acts upon the unloader weights and theyswing outward. This permits the plunger and thrust pin to moveinward and the pilot valve to close. The escape path to atmospherefor the cylinder pressure is now closed and the compressor pumpsair in a normal MANNer. If  the  pilot  valve tube line is excessively hot, it is a good indication thatthe pilot valve is leaking and adjustment is required.
